New Editor Appointed for Journal of Payments Strategy & Systems

Gijs Boudewijn, renowned expert in the payments industry, will become the new editor of the Journal of Payments Strategy & Systems (JPSS) from 7th July 2025. He succeeds the journal’s previous editor, Gerard Hartsink, who has served since 2021 and is retiring as Editor, but will remain on the Editorial Board of the journal.
Gijs Boudewijn comments: “I have been an avid reader of JPSS for many years. I believe it is the most credible periodical for payments professionals. The practical, but in-depth nature of the contributions, written by experts in the field, and the rigorous peer-review process by the Editorial Board is unique and key in differentiating it from other publications. And given the payments industry’s dynamic and rapidly evolving landscape globally, I am super excited that I now have the opportunity to contribute to the further development of this very important journal.”

About Gijs Boudewijn
Gijs Boudewijn retired as general manager of the Dutch Payments Association (DPA) on 1st June 2025. He has 40 years of experience in domestic as well as international payments-related issues and was closely involved in regulatory matters, such as the introduction of the euro, Y2K, PSD2/3/PSR, open banking and the RTS of the European Banking Association, instant payments and the digital euro. He recently stepped down as Chair of the Legal Support Group of the European Payments Council (EPC) after 13 years. He also served several terms as an EPC Board member, and was Vice-Chair of the Payment Expert Group of the European Banking Federation (EBF, after having served 3 terms as Chair). He was Vice-Chair of the European Card Payments Association (ECPA), and Chair of the Payments Working Group of the International Banking Federation (IBFed). Furthermore, he was a member of the Payment Systems Market Expert Group (PSMEG) of the European Commission and Co-Chair of the EPC’s SEPA Payment Account Access scheme Multi Stakeholder Group on behalf of the credit sector associations. Recently, he joined the Editorial Board of JPSS. On 11th June 2025, he took office as the new Chairman of the Board of the EPC. He is a regular speaker at national and international conferences on strategic and regulatory payments-related issues, instant payments, new technologies, open banking and pan-European payment solutions.
